Expansive Exploration in Columbus, GA

My experience at the National Infantry Museum was the perfect microcosm of my time in Columbus, GA. It was one of very few notable sights in the city, however, it was quite expansive and time consuming. I often found myself with short periods of boredom while in Columbus, but whenever I stumbled upon something to do, it took up a good amount of time and captured my attention.

It actually took me two visits to fully explore the Infantry Museum, but I enjoyed every minute of it. In conjunction with the National Naval Museum in Pensacola, I have a pretty full vision of what wars have looked like since the birth of our country. While I obviously don't know how they felt, looking through these museums has certainly given me an idea. With that said, war museums carry a lot of emotional baggage and weight, so I was just as happy to explore other museums.

My other expansive museum experience was at the Columbus Museum-a unique hybrid history and art museum. While it didn't do either type of museum extremely well, the concept was quite novel and interesting. One moment I'd be looking at some 21st century abstract art and the next I'd be reading about the civil rights movement in the area. It was also fun to see where the history and art overlapped. One of the most prominent examples being their collection of photo-realistic painting portraits from the late 18th and early 19th century. This museum also took two visits to fully explore and was a nice pass time.

My adventures in Columbus, GA were not nearly as constant as I had hoped, but whenever I did find something to explore, it was a very fulfilling endeavor. I'd say that sentiment captures the vibe of the city. There isn't a lot of individual things to do, but everything you do find will keep your attention for a good while.
